Bebel Gilberto

Venue: "With her rich, evocative and smoky voice and gentle blend of bossa nova and electronica, Bebel Gilberto has been enchanting fans and critics worldwide for almost 40 years and the Brazilian singer is set to make a welcome return to London in October.

Bebel presents a brand-new show interpreting the songs of her father,  João Gilberto,  who passed away in 2019 after a 70-year career in music, and is widely regarded as the ‘father of Bossa Nova music’.

It was following the release of 2000’s Tanto Tempo, which was nominated for two Latin Grammys and sold over a million copies, that she was launched into the mainstream and became widely regarded as one of the preeminent Brazilian vocalists of modern times.

Bebel has gone on to perform at prestigious concert halls, arenas and festivals around the globe and her music has been featured on numerous film soundtracks and TV shows including Eat Pray Love, Rio, Sex And The City and Six Feet Under.

Bebel began singing with João Gilberto as a small child and the songs she sings tonight have been with her all her life.”

Gilberto Gil

Gilberto Gil

Venue: "Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil performs a special show at the Hall to bid his musical farewell to London.

This concert is a celebration of Gil’s sixty-year career with a repertoire chosen from down the decades.

Gil’s early songs explored a folk-country sound. In the late 1950s he started to be influenced by bossa nova with its southern coastal beach sound, so different from his early years in Bahia. With other musicians, including Caetano Veloso, he was a founder of the Tropicália movement, which merged Brazilian and African rhythms with British and American psychedelia and pop rock. Tropicália became a focus of dissatisfaction with the Brazilian dictatorship, and in the 1970s Gil became a political exile in London beginning a fifty-year association with the City.

Upon returning to Brazil, Gil continued his rich musical career which led to the recording of over sixty albums, millions of sales and nine Grammys. In 2002, as Minister of Culture, he began his involvement in representing Brazil around the world, particularly on cultural development and diversity and the importance of Latin American countries in a globalised world.”

Geraldo Azevedo

7:00 PM19:00

Geraldo Azevedo

Venue: "As an excellent guitarist, singer, and composer Geraldo Azevedo has created in his songs a unique blend between the sophisticated harmonies of bossa-nova and the pulsating rhythms of Latin music. In his work, it is possible to find, side by side, lyrical love songs, such as “Dia Branco” (Geraldo Azevedo and Renato Rocha), which completed 40 years of release in 2019, and Caribbean numbers full of swing, such as “Veneza Americana” (Geraldo Azevedo and Carlos Fernando). There is also an urban flavor in “Táxi Lunar” and regional rhythms that sing about the Brazilian sertão and other icons of northeastern culture and folklore, such as “Morena Linda Flor” (Geraldo Azevedo and Geraldo Amaral).

His discography is composed of several albums, among solo works – like the most recent, the live CD “Arraiá de Geraldo Azevedo”, released in 2020 – and successful partnerships, such as in “Violivoz”, with Chico César, in “O Grande Encontro” (1, 2, 3 and 4), with Alceu Valença, Elba Ramalho and Zé Ramalho, and in “Cantoria” (1 and 2), with Elomar, Xangai, and Vital Farias. Essentially a composer, Geraldo writes his songs in partnerships with poets/friends, whether since the beginning of his career, with Carlos Fernando and Renato Rocha, or in more recent years, with Capinan and Fausto Nilo. The artist celebrates, in 2022, 50 years of discography career. His first album, “Geraldo Azevedo & Alceu Valença”, was released in 1972.

Some of his compositions cross generations and form a repertoire forever engraved in the public’s memory. “Caravana” (Geraldo Azevedo and Alceu Valença), “Moça Bonita” (Geraldo Azevedo and Capinan), and “Dona da Minha Cabeça” (Geraldo Azevedo and Fausto Nilo), are examples of songs released in the 70’s that are still part of his current setlist."

Arandu – Listen to the Weather

Venue: “Since the 1980s, audiovisual production has been an essential tool of struggle and resistance for Brazilian Indigenous groups. Currently, about 90% of Brazilian Indigenous communities have their own filmmakers, who have established themselves as key figures in the symbolic production of knowledge, contributing to subvert and decolonize commonly accepted visual notions about what it means to be Indigenous.

This programme showcases four short and medium-length films that form an important part of this contemporary Latin American cinema tradition. This selection’s thematic focus is on women’s environmental movements to revert deforestation, and on the efforts of Indigenous communities to narrate their histories, from their own point of view.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with curators Takumã Kuikuro and Christian Fischgold.”

Gal Costa

Venue: “Brazilian singer Gal Costa aka Maria da Graça Costa Penna Burgos’ career began in 1965 with the release of her debut single, under her real name. Soon after its release she changed her name to Gal Costa and began working with the likes of Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and his sister Maria Bethânia.

Along side those artists, Gal went on to became a key figure in ‘Tropicália’, one of Brazils most iconic cultural movements, that emerged in 1968. ‘Tropicalia' mixed psychedelics, avant-garde electronic experiments, samba, funk and soul with rock ’n’ roll from the UK and USA – most notably, The Beatles. It was a powerful movement in social and political terms, so much so that Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil were arrested and exiled to the UK in 1969.”

Amaro Freitas

Venue: “One of the biggest stars of Brazilian jazz, Amaro Freitas, performs right here at Band on the Wall.

In the North-Eastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco lies the coastal city of Recife, where Amaro Freitas began pioneering a new sound of Brazilian jazz. For the prodigious young pianist, the spirit of his hometown runs deep. From the Afro-Brazilian maracatu born on the sugar plantations of slavery, to the high intensity carnival rhythms of frevo and baião, Amaro’s heavily percussive approach to jazz is as indebted to these Pernambuco traditions as it is to Coltrane, Parker and Monk.”

Hermeto Pascoal

Venue: “The limitless imagination of the Brazilian’s production and performances has been widely celebrated in the world of improv and jazz.

First building his curiosity from the natural sound of his grandfather’s blacksmith shop, Pascoal would experiment with the noises of scrap metal pieces and produce music from ordinary objects.

The multi-instrumentalist’s insight into freeform performances positioned him in a unique space, Adding his delicate touch to the busy percussion, break-neck bossas, samba and endlessly modulating melodies of Brazilian music.

Working with the likes of Edu Lobo, Elis Regina, César Camargo Mariano and Miles Davis amongst others, his influence on Jazz started to heighten in the 1970s.

Trusted with composing several tracks on Miles Davis’ album ‘Live/Evil’, this October, Pascoal welcomes you to a kaleidoscopic sonic party that transports you somewhere a little warmer, freer, and more vibrant.”
